About Rupert Roberts
Born at Marsh Harbour, Abaco on
May 28, 1937. He moved to Nassau at the age of 11 where he
attended Government High School in Nassau Court.
Rupert attended many Management
and Sales courses in Nassau and the U.S.A. including the
Dale Carnegie Sales and Public Speaking Courses.
He
was first employed by City Meat Market, owned by the late
Stafford Sands, Sr. as a clerk and typist in the warehouse
in Palmdale.
He later took a position in the
accounts department down town, corner of Bay and East
Streets. A few years later at the age of 24 he was promoted
to General Manager. After serving as General Manager of City
Markets and Nassau Food Stores for 5 years he left to
venture into the business world for himself.
He opened his the first Super
Value on East Street in April, 1965 with the mission of
"putting food on the Bahamian table at the best possible
price". The chain grew along with the Bahamas to 11 stores
and a staff of 500 employees.
Numerous endeavors followed
including banking, real estate and the Bimini Sands Resort &
Marina development. Rupert has assisted in many charitable
causes and has received the highest award in Rotary- The
Paul Harris Award, the Distinguished Citizen's Award by the
Chamber of Commerce and also the Silver Jubilee Award in
Business from the Government of the Bahamas. In January 2004
he received the honor officer of the Most Excellent Order of
the British Empire (OBE). In May 2005 he received the CEE
Global Awards for Ethics & Excellence. In June 2005 he
received the Outstanding Service Award by the Margaret
McDonald Policy Management and Administration Centre.
Rupert was brought up in the
Brethren faith and attended Central Gospel Chapel,
Dowdeswell Street and Shirley Heights Gospel Chapel.
Married to the former Margaret
Jewers of Nassau, the marriage produced three children,
Richard, Judy & Candy and two grandchildren, Paige &
Patrick.
Rupert enjoys boating,
swimming, tennis & reading in his spare time.
